One of the first employees of Microsoft’s gaming division and co-founder of the Xbox Project, Laura Fryer, shared thoughts on Xbox hardware and its future. Laura Fryer was also responsible for games like Gears of War. She stated that the Xbox hardware is pretty much dead. The claims from the company say otherwise, so you might need to take it with a grain of salt.
She also criticized Xbox’s new approach to gaming, ‘Xbox Anywhere’. Referring to ROG Ally, she stated that it is something that many feel unnecessary.
Laura Fryer stated, “As one of the founding members of the Xbox team, I’m not pleased with where things are today. I don’t love watching all of the value that I helped create slowly get eroded away,”
Fryer thinks that Microsoft is trying to turn everyone to the Game Pass. She acknowledged the value that the subscription service offers. Fryer also stated that increasing the price of the Xbox is aimed at making the Game Pass more valuable and appealing. Fryer mentions Outer World 2 as an example.
Laura also stated that the current direction Microsoft is heading makes the future of their IPs uncertain.
She also stated, “I think Xbox hardware is dead. The plan appears to be to just drive everybody to Game Pass. And let’s be clear, it has a lot of value. I’m thinking that might be why they decided to charge $80 for Outer Worlds 2.. And here’s the thing, maybe it will work,”
Based on the things she said, ROG Ally could be the start of that. Of course, none of it is confirmed by Xbox, so there is a shadow of doubt to it.
