A new job listing at WB Games Montréal mentions the requirement for developers for a live service project. The job listing states “from concept to post-launch live operations. The experience required for it includes “deep understanding of the full game development lifecycle, including live services”.
There aren’t any specific details given regarding the game, but the developers state that it will be “a high-quality AAA game based on one of the iconic IPs from the vast Warner Bros. and DC Comics catalogue”. It seems like Warner Bros. Games is not going to learn even the hard way.
Gotham Knights was the previous game of WB Games Montréal. Though it was a single-player with co-op elements, it was still a flop. Last December, 99 employees were laid off by the developer. The listing shows that the developer is preparing for their next game.
The Head of DC, James Gunn, confirmed back in February that he is in talks with Rocksteady and NetherRealm to develop a new game in the DC Universe. It is not yet clear if WB Games Montréal is working on a DC game or something else.
There was some shuffle in leadership at Warner Bros. Games. The shift in leadership led them to focus on the biggest franchises in the developer’s arsenal, like Mortal Kombat, DC, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter.
Another Live Service After The Suicide Squad
Based on the previous decision on flexibility, it is highly likely that the new game will take place in the DC Universe. This would be a bold decision after the disastrous performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The poor performance of their game resulted in a 41% drop in the revenue of Warner Bros. Gaming last year, which also led to layoffs at the studio.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is still online, but it won’t be receiving any new content, so the support for the game is gone.
Earlier this year, Warner Bros. also cancelled a Wonder Woman game from Monolith, citing a “strategic change in direction” as the reason for cancellation. Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego are all being shut down.
