Bungie Has Laid off 220 Employees, Bad News for Destiny 2 Players

Another mass layoff is hitting Bungie. Pete Parsons the CEO of Bungie, has made an announcement on the developer’s website. The cause for the layoff is the increase in the cost of development and economic conditions. The practice has been common for the last two years. As per the report, 220 employees would be laid off which is 17% of the company’s current workforce.

Pete Parsons also stated that Bungie is also working on integrating 155 employees into another department of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). When these numbers are combined with 100 other employees who were laid off the previous year, it means that Bungie has lost around 40% of its workforce since last year.

Bungie had 1200 employees last year and then 100 of them were laid off which resulted in the delay of Destiny 2: Final Shape.

This new layoff announcement comes at a time when Bungie is working on a new game while also maintaining Destiny 2.

Pete Parsons “We are working with PlayStation Studios leadership to spin out one of our incubation projects – an action game set in a brand-new science-fantasy universe – to form a new studio within PlayStation Studios to continue its promising development,”

Pete Parsons also offered an explanation for all the news. He stated that the Developer (Bungie) leadership team is spread too thin on different projects and that Bungie grew too quickly.

All of it affected Bungie’s projects which had an impact on Destiny 2 Lightfall and resulted in the delay of their game Marathon.

What to Expect

Pete Parsons explained, “We were overly ambitious, our financial safety margins were subsequently exceeded, and we began running in the red,” He further stated that Bungie will continue to support Destiny 2 and the development of Marathon. Pete Parsons stated, “We still have over 850 team members building Destiny and Marathon, and we will continue to build amazing experiences that exceed our players’ expectations”.

The number of employees was reduced which means that we will see the impact of that reduction in the next few months. These layoffs and integration will have a huge impact on Destiny 2 in the upcoming month. Marathon might also face delays.
