During The Game Awards 2024, Josef Fares from the developer Hazelight Studios showcased Split Fiction. It is a co-op platformer game that combines different genres and styles to present something creative.
The game takes place across two different realities, two different writers are pulled into a simulation by someone who is looking to steal their work. The character of Mio and Zoe has to work together and use the game’s distinct style to escape the simulation and save their hard work. The game shares a lot of similarities with the developer’s previous games It Takes Two and A Way Out.
The game’s unique feature is how it handles the two different characters. Mio writes sci-fi while Zoe is a fantasy writer. Both these world is translated into a robust platforming experience that combines abilities and mechanics from two different genres. The challenges range from doing a dance battle against a monkey to fighting a kitten to escaping a sun that is going supernova and so on. Since the two worlds share major differences, there is a surprise waiting for the player everywhere.
The founder of Hazelight Studios Josef Fares had this to say about the game “At Hazelight, we’ve been building co-op games for 10 years, and with every game, we push beyond what players expect for action-adventure co-op games. I’m so proud of what we have built with Split Fiction. Let me tell you guys, it’s going to blow your mind,” he further continues “Because Mio and Zoe jump back and forth between sci-fi and fantasy worlds, we’ve been able to do some really wild things with gameplay and storytelling. This is definitely our most epic co-op adventure yet.”
The Friend Pass
The studio’s flagship feature of Friend Pass is back which enables the owner of the game to invite a friend to play for free. The inclusion of cross-play will enable players to use this feature across all platforms. Split Fiction is set to release on March 6, 2025.
