Don’t expect Marathon to release this September as intended because it has been indefinitely delayed. The statement from the developers reads, “We’re using this time to empower the team to create the intense, high-stakes experience that a title like Marathon is built around.”
The developer wants to use the player feedback that they have received in the closed alpha playtest. Bungie wants to continue the testing for a longer period. Developers want to put more emphasis on making the game “uniquely compelling”. They view it as a game with survival, mystery, intense combat, and raid-like mechanics, something that they specialize in. More challenging AI encounters will also be added.
The game got negative press last month due to plagiarism claims of stolen artwork. Bungie replied to it and stated that the former artist used the assets without their knowledge. That issue has not been mentioned in the delay statement, but it is not hard to imagine that it could have played a part.
Even though delay might sound like bad news to some players, it’s always better to get a full game on day one rather than a broken game that takes months or even years to fix. Bungie stated, “Through every comment and real-time conversation on social media and Discord, your voice has been strong and clear,” and further stated, “We’ve taken this to heart, and we know we need more time to craft Marathon into the game that truly reflects your passion.”
Delay is usually a good decision in the long run. Bungie said they would give more information regarding the release date at a later date.
