Console-exclusive games have seen a major change in recent years. Publishers are going after the multiplatform instead of sticking to a single platform. True exclusives have disappeared from both Sony and Xbox side since their games are available on PC as well. Xbox has opted to release its console-exclusive game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PlayStation 5. It was a decision that did sit well with everyone.
In an interview, Phil Spencer the head of Microsoft Gaming division talks about the exclusiveness of games, Bungie, and the decision he has to take. He admits that he made some bad decisions but does not regret the decision he took.
Phil Spencer said “Getting the pitch for Destiny on ‘do we want to sign this’ – we ended up not signing Destiny,” he further states “It obviously went with Activision, and to see what it grew into, like from a business kind of Xbox standpoint, I can look at it … and it’s just a really interesting journey in terms of what [Bungie] built.”
He talks about Destiny and Guitar Hero among other thing.
The head of Xbox rejected Guitar Hero which eventually got published by Activision. Phil Spencer decided to let go of the Guitar Hero because he thought things would not work out well for the game.
In his words, he states “I’ve passed on some of the worst, like made some of the worst game choice decisions. “[Alex Rigopulos] pitches a game where they’re actually going to make plastic guitars and they’re going to plug into consoles and then they’re going to sell tracks … “I’m like, ‘really, do we really think that’s going to work?’” he further stated “I’m not a regrets type person. Maybe that’s a fault of mine, but I passed on so many games.”
He prefers to look for opportunities ahead rather than lament over what could have been.
