Sony Has Permanently Shutdown Firewalk Studios, the Studio Behind Concord

Firewalk Studios, the developer behind the PlayStation’s disastrous PVP game Concord has been shut down. The CEO of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst put out a message to the staff of PlayStation announcing the closure of Firewalk Studios and mobile game studio Neon Koi. As per the reports from Bloomberg, the closure will result in the loss of 210 jobs.

In the message Hermen Hulst, states “We have spent considerable time these past few months exploring all our options,” He further continues  “After much thought, we have determined the best path forward is to permanently sunset the game and close the studio. I want to thank all of Firewalk for their craftsmanship, creative spirit, and dedication.”

According to Hermen Hulst, Concrod did not meet the expectations of PlayStation and he stated “Take the lessons learned from Concord and continue to advance our live service capabilities to deliver future growth in this area.”

Concord was released for PlayStation 5 and PC on August 23rd, 2024 but it was taken offline due to the low sales of the game. According to estimates the game only sold 25,000 copies which is quite low. It hit the all-time peak player count at 697 which is even lower than some poor-performing games such as The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

The Mobile Game Division

Neon Koi the mobile game developing studio has also been shut down even though Hermen Hulst stated that mobile games are still a priority and area of growth. The studio Neon Koi was acquired by Sony back in 2022 and was previously known as Savage Games. Back then the developer was working on AAA live service mobile games. Hermen Hulst also stated “With this re-focused approach, Neon Koi will close, and its mobile action game will not be moving forward,” and further continues. “Both decisions were given serious thought, and ultimately, we feel they are the right ones to strengthen the organization.”

All of it will result in job cuts which has been a growing trend in the gaming industry in the past few years.
