The Developers of Palworld Pocketpair are Being Sued By Nintendo and The Pokemon Company

The Pokémon Company and Nintendo have filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair, the creator of Palworld. The lawsuit states “Seeks an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages because Palworld, a game developed and released by the Defendant, infringes multiple patent rights.”

When Palworld was released in January, The Pokémon Company said that they investigating the game since it uses the setting and characters similar to that of Pokémon World though it is more violent. Palworld was huge upon launch on PC and Xbox, the game is yet to release on PlayStation. The game sold more than 25 million copies in the first month after its release. Different modes were created for the game and some mods even replaced the game characters with actual Pokémon characters.

In January, The Pokémon Company stated  “We have not granted any permission for the use of Pokemon intellectual property or assets in that game. We intend to investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to the Pokemon.”

In response to the lawsuit, Pocketpair stated that they have not gotten an official notice for the lawsuit and don’t have any idea about the patents involved in the case. Pocketpair’s response to the lawsuit states “It is truly unfortunate that we will be forced to allocate significant time to matters unrelated to game development due to this lawsuit. However, we will do our utmost for our fans, and to ensure that indie game developers are not hindered or discouraged from pursuing their creative ideas.”
