Capcom has announced a new Onimusha game called Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The game was announced during the 2024 The Game Awards with a brief gameplay clip and is planned to be released in 2026. This will be the first mainline game in the franchise since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams which was released in 2006. Fans have long awaited the new installment of the series.
The new teaser video shows us that the game might opt out of fixed camera in favor of full 3D combat. We get to see the protagonist fighting against zombie samurai and collecting golden orbs. The gameplay tease also shows us the most likely protagonist Samanosuke. He was the hero of the original Onimusha game.
With the new camera angle, the series can position itself alongside games like Ghost of Tsushima, Nioh, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, among others. Many are hoping that the game will bring back its blend of historical elements and supernatural elements while at the same time bringing new stuff.
The first Onimusha was released in 2001 on the PlayStation 2. In 2018 it was remastered for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch. Until now, the remaster was the last time that we had anything new from the franchise. No other details regarding the game were provided other than its expected release date. It will open a new chapter in the Onimusha series.
