Bungie has officially revealed their upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon. It was one of the major reason for the Sony to acquire Bungie. The game is set to release on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on September 23, 2025. Marathon will feature cross progression between different platforms which will enable you to transfer saves between different platforms.
It should also be noted that it will not be a free-to-play game which is usually the case with the base version of live-service games.
Each match will have six teams of three players and these teams will compete with each other to collect as many resources as they can and escape before the time runs out. It will have different characters with each having unique skills. There is also a PVE element at play since the map will also have AI enemies to fight against and deadly fauna of the environment to survive.
Each match will take place on an abandoned colony on a planet called Tau Ceti IV. Players will also need to survive dynamic events that will change the different conditions of a location as well as introduce different weather elements. Additional objectives can be completed and you can then go to the ship called Marathon that is orbiting over the planet.
The game will also feature seasonal storytelling. How successful they are at pulling this remains to be seen. Sony’s previous attempts at doing so ended in a disaster, I am talking about you Concord.
A cinematic trailer for the game was also released along with the gameplay trailer. A Closed Alpha for the Marathon will start from April 23 and ending May 4. The Closed Alpha announcement was accompanied by a new trailer.
