Helldivers 2, a co-op third-person shooter from SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment), is set to release on Xbox on 26 August 2025. It was a PlayStation-exclusive game that was only available on PlayStation and PC, but now it has been expanded to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S consoles. It is a significant milestone; the release is taking place at the beginning of the cross-platform release era.
Published by PlayStation and developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, Helldivers puts players in the shoes of an elite team of soldiers who are tasked with spreading “peace, liberty, and Managed Democracy.” Beyond the Earth, across the galaxy. Players will team up with up to three other players. There is emphasis on big explosions, over-the-top gameplay, and strategic destruction of your enemies.
Helldivers 2 was received positively upon its release on PlayStation and PC in February 2024. It even became a commercial and critical success.
The director of Helldivers 2 had this to say about its release on Xbox: “We know gamers have been asking for this for some time, and we are excited to bring more Helldivers into our game,” he further continues, “The more players we have, the more stories we can tell. The fight for Super Earth has only just begun.”
Xbox has already released their exclusive games on PlayStation, such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Forza Horizon 5. The remaster of Gears of War, Gears of War: Reloaded, is already slated for release. More Xbox exclusives are bound to pop up on PlayStation, and PlayStation is stretching its feet on cross-platform release with Helldivers 2 on Xbox.
It is a major shift in the definition of exclusive and what it means in modern gaming.
