Driver Live-Action Adaptation Has Been Cancelled

UBI Soft seems to be active in live-action adaptation with the latest update being the cancelation Driver live-action series.

The first Driver game was released in 1999. Since its first release, we have seen more installments in the series. The latest entry into the series was Driver: Renegade which was released in 2011. After the release of the last game, UBI Soft announced the release of a live-action adaptation in the intervening years. The work on the series started in 2021.

Now, three years after the announcement the Driver live-action series has been canceled. The revelation comes from the annual report of UBI Soft. The report includes a wide internal stuff. The cancellation of the Driver TV series was in the report.

The Timing of Cancellation

There are no specific details regarding the cancellation of the Driver TV series but different factors could have led to the cancellation. One of the reasons could be UBI Soft’s fear that people could have lost interest in the video game series over time. The action-driving game is a favorite franchise for the developer but the absence of a new Driver could result in a dwindled fan base for the game. UBI Soft has announced a new Driver game so they would want to focus on that instead of a live-action series.

Despite all that, the state of video game adaptation makes the cancelation unexpected. Some major adaptations such as The Last of Us, Fallout, and Halo have increased the popularity of video game adaptations. There are even film adaptations such as The Super Mario Bros. movie.

All these adaptations have done well which has increased the number of people interested in video game adaptations. The trend of video game live-action adaptation can lead to more companies doing video game adaptation. The cancellation of a live-action Driver series is unexpected.

UBI Soft has a Film & Television department which means that there is a system in place to support live-action adaptation. The cancellation of the Driver live-action series seems even more confusing at such times. The opposite aspect to all this would be that the new Driver will have more expectations to live up to. Whatever the case is, one thing is certain the cancellation of Driver live-action series at a time like this feels out of place.
