Black Panther game which was in development by EA Games and Cliffhanger Games has been cancelled after two years of its announcement. The studio behind it, Cliffhanger Games has been shut down. The cancelation was part of a series of layoffs from the big developer EA Games. Don’t confuse this Black Panther game with Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, which is a separate game.
The president of EA Entertainment and Technology Laura Miele announced it via email statement “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”
After being done with the Black Panther project, EA could shift its focus to developing other big titles. It includes an Ironman game that was announced in 2022, the next Star Wars: Jedi game, and a new Mass Effect game.
The developer’s ongoing games like Apex Legends, The Sim, and Battlefield will be on the priority list of the publisher.
Laura Miele stated while taking the human cost of the restructuring “These decisions are hard.” and further stated “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them—including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”
The closure of Cliffhanger Games occurred shortly after the company laid off 300 to 400 employees. The company also canceled two incubation projects that were in early development including a Titanfall project.
Major Cuts
Major cuts were made in BioWare earlier this year as well due to the underperformance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
The studio Cliffhanger Games was established in 2023 with the goal of creating a narrative-driven, single-player Black Panther game.
The studio’s closure shows the increasing financial and creative burden in the industry, especially those projects that are outside the company’s regular releases.
