Sony is in the process of making a new handheld console that will allow players to play PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 6 (In case it is released after the release of PlayStation 6) games anywhere. As per the Bloomberg report, the console is being developed as a competitor to Microsoft and Nintendo. It was previously reported that Microsoft is also making handheld consoles but it is going to take them some time to do so.
Nintendo is leading the handheld gaming console with their new generation of Switch being expected to be released in 2025. Microsoft is also making its handheld console which was recently revealed by Xbox CEO Phil Spencer though he stated that they are “a few years out.” from the full release. The handheld gaming market has been expanding thanks to the emergence of different handheld gaming systems such as Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and others.
Sony has partially jumped into the handheld market with their PlayStation Portal. I am saying “partially jumped” because the PlayStation Portal streams PS5 games from the cloud. According to some reports, the original plan for PlayStation Portal was to make a stand-alone device that play games locally.
The new Sony Handheld console with work on the idea of a standalone device. Such a device would help expand the PlayStation audience even further and make it more accessible. Sony is not new to portable consoles as they have previously released PSP and PS Vita both of which have long been discontinued.
