The developer of The Order: 1886, Ready at Dawn pitched the sequel to Sony, which was rejected. There is no clear reason for the rejection, but it seems like the chances would have been higher if the game had received a better critical response.
During an interview with MinnMax, Andrea Pessino, the co-founder of Ready at Dawn, stated, “We really thought that with The Order, we had set up such a unique and appealing baseline that people were going to forgive some of its shortcomings. ” He further continued, “It would’ve been an incredible sequel, I can tell you for a fact.”
Andrea Pessino further states that it is actually a good thing that a sequel did not happen because the budget for it would have been small. The studio doesn’t have any leverage that they can use for a better deal. He explains that despite all this the studio would have taken the opportunity to right the wrongs of The Order: 1886.
No information regarding the setting of the game was provided since it is Sony’s IP not Ready at Dawn. The Order: 1886 fell short of content due to the pressure of releasing the game sooner. It resulted in interactive sequences turning into cutscenes which was the game’s major problem. Andrea Pessino stated “We were desperate, you know, we had to ship,” he further continued “We need at least one more year and we didn’t get it.”
Rejection of The Sequel
The rejection of the sequel was due to low critical reception, not actual sales numbers. The internal mock reviews for the game were higher than the actual score. Andrea Pessino said that a higher score could have increased the chances of getting a sequel. Meta acquired Ready at Dawn but it was shut down in August 2024.
