Meta acquired Ready at Dawn in 2020, but just four years later, it’s shutting down the developer. Ready at Dawn is a first-party studio that developed games like the Echo series, God of War: Chains of Olympus, The Oder 1886, and Daxter. The studio is to be shut down on an immediate basis.
In the month of July, there was a report stating that Meta was reducing the Reality Labs budget by 20%. An internal memo that was sent to employees supports the statement. In their most recent earning report, Meta stated that the Reality Labs which is Meta’s VR division has lost close to 4.5 billion.
Initially, when the studio was acquired by Meta, it was stated that it would “continue creating memorable, immersive, and innovative VR content for gamers around the world as an independently-operated studio.” Ready at Dawn developed and released Lone Echo 2 for Rift S. The VR game can be played natively on the Meta Quest headset. The Echo VR was eventually closed down by Meta in August 2023.
The Reason Behind Closure
As per CTO Andrew Bosworth, the resources assigned to Echo VR will be used for other uses. The team of Ready at Dawn stated that they are working on a new project but it seems like that project won’t come to fruition.
