The developer of Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi series, Respawn has announced that they are going to lay off some of its employees. The exact amount of employees being laid off remains undisclosed but it is more than 300.
Additionally, the developer is also canceling two games that were in the early stages of development so that they can focus on their regular games. On a social media post, they stated that it was done for “targeted team adjustments” to provide “player-first experiences.”
The developers stated “As we sharpen our focus for the future, we’ve made the decision to step away from two early-stage incubation projects and make some target team adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi” They further continued “These decisions aren’t easy, and we are deeply grateful to every teammate affected — their creativity and contributions have helped build Respawn into what it is today.
No details were provided about the projects that have been shut down and were in incubation. As per the reports, one of the major projects that saw cancellation was a new Titanfall game or a game in the Titanfall universe. We could have gotten a new Titanfall game if things had gone in the right direction.
The round of layoffs is not the first time that EA or Respawn has seen layoffs and it certainly won’t be the last time.
