Tango Gameworks Has Been Acquired by Krafton

Krafton, the publisher of PUBG has taken over the Tango Gameworks from Xbox as a part of a “strategic agreement”. Krafton also acquired Hi-Fi Rush IP from Xbox.

The company has stated that they are working along with Xbox for a smooth transition. It will enable the Tango team to continue developing Hi-Fi Rush IP and explore future projects related to that.

Tango Gameworks was part of the four studios that Bethesda announced would be closed down in the month of May. Tango Gameworks was created by the creator of Resident Evil Shinji Mikami back in the year 2010. The studio went on to develop, Evil Within 1, Evil Within 2, and Ghostwire Tokyo. Their newest game is HI-FI Rush which was released in 2023 and was critically acclaimed. Xbox gained control of Bethesda when it bought ZeniMax Media in 2021.  ZeniMax Media is the parent company of Bethesda and Bethesda is the parent company of Tango Gameworks.

Even though the HI-FI rush was a commercial success, Microsoft still announced that they would close off Tango Gameworks to focus on bigger games. Along with Tango Gameworks, developers of Redfall Arkane Austin, Roundhouse Games, and developers of Mighty Doom studio Alpha Dog were also closed down. Krafton also clarified that the acquisition will have no effect on the previously released games and these games will remain available where they are currently available.

The Deal

The exact statement from the company read “This integration reinforces Krafton’s dedication to expanding its global footprint and enhancing its portfolio with innovative and high-quality content. The addition of Tango Gameworks represents a strategic alignment with Krafton’s mission to push the boundaries of interactive entertainment.”

Known for games like TERA, The Callisto Protocol, and PUBG, Krafton is a South Korean developer with studios such as PUBG Studios, Bluehole, Neon Giant, Striking Distance, and more. There are no details provided regarding the transaction of the deal. One thing is certain, a studio was saved in the era of layoffs and studio closures.
