Remnant: From The Ashes Review

Remnant: From The Ashes

It is a game that brings a different type of setting to the gaming world. The game brings together different settings and makes up a unique world. You can feel the vibe of Gears of War, Fallout and Dark Souls. The feel of the game is more closely related to Dark Soul but it is more focus on ranged combat. In a sense, it is Dark Souls with guns, focused on range combat. The addition of multiplayer is just cherry on top making it all the more interesting. There are melee weapons in the game but most of its focus is on range combat. The game borrow concepts form many games and making something unique from them. At first glance, I was skeptical of the game but Remnant: From The Ashes deserves attention.

Remnant: From The Ashes Setting and Plot

The world is a mixture of different settings that creates a brand new setting for the game. Every time you play this game you will end up with a different environment. Experience of this game is different for every player because it randomly generates levels. While I was playing Remnant: From The Ashes, for the second time, my experience was different than the first one. Even the location of dungeons was in different places. The boss can also change and each player will face a different boss. Environmental storytelling is not one of its strong suites because it focuses on random generation. You will be able to notice the aspects of Post Apocalyptic, Western, Victorian, Mad Max, Dark Soul and Gear of Wars setting.

The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where creatures known as Roots dominate the world. Humans live in hiding and fight for their survival each day. The game begins with the search for a hero who can stop the creatures from appearing in the world. To stop these creatures the Dragon Tower is required which can only be sealed by the missing hero. Humans send the hero to the Dragon Tower where he disappears. Storytelling is not a strong suit of the game.  Remnant: From The Ashes focuses more on the combat in different types of environments.

Remnant: From The Ashes is Dark Soul Type Game with Guns

The game resembles Dark Souls in many aspects especially when it comes to combat. Dark Souls is focused on melee combat while Remnant: From the Ashes is Dark Soul type game with ranged combat. Instead of swords, maces, spears, magical and other melee weapons, you will be using guns. The entire combat revolves around guns so there is no concept of blocking. The only sure way to avoid damage is dodging the strikes of your enemy. You can use melee weapons and you don’t even have to switch for it. All you need to do is press the button without aiming and your character will automatically switch to melee.

Combat of the Game is Amazing

There are no specific classes in the game. You can start with any character, the only difference between characters is the type of starting gear they carry. No matter which character you chose your character abilities will remain the same. However, you should keep in mind that equipment means a lot in this game. Experience for each player is different because the world is randomly generated. The bosses that you face would also be different along with the strategies to take them down. Bosses come swarms of underlings that will attack your characters. With the swarms of underlings, the bosses are tough but without them, they are not as tough as Dark Souls.

You will be fighting with guns for the most part but you will still need to keep an eye on the stamina. If you are not careful enough then you will quickly burn through your stamina and will end up defenseless. There is no blocking so you can only rely on dodging. You will constantly need to upgrade your weapons while moving ahead. Bosses will drop loot for you which you can use to craft new equipment. You can craft new weapons from the material that you get from loot or you can craft mods. Crafting of new weapons is not that important because you can just upgrade your initial gear. Just keep adding mods to them and they would be as powerful as any other power weapon in the game or even more.

Remnant: From The Ashes Have Some Faults in Overall Mechanics

The game won’t punish you for dying like Dark Souls but that doesn’t make it easier. When facing bosses you will be in a lot of trouble if you are alone. One can play the game both single-player and in the co-op mode. However, it would be nearly impossible for you to take down some bosses alone. The underling of a boss will make it hard for you to land a blow on the boss. You will always need companions to keep you safe from the swarm of underlings or protect you while you are alone. The game should compensate for the players that are playing alone.

The game is a looter shooter where you get loot for taking down enemies but the drop rate is not in balance. Better equipment only falls from bosses and regular enemies do not provide you with better loot. Even if you go back to explore the area there still won’t be any bosses but you will be able to earn XP by taking down regular enemies. You can have better gear if you keep on upgrading your existing gear instead of upgrading new ones.

The type of damage is also different for each type of weapon. One of gun shoot bees which is one of the weirdest weapons I have ever seen in any game. There is also a submachine gun that fire incendiary rounds by default. The submachine gun can also be converted into a flame thrower. There is also a rifle that fires radioactive beams to take down enemies. Blackhole rifle is my favorite which creates black holes that destroy enemies. There is not much verity when it comes to weapons but you can upgrade weapons using mods. Gunfire Games have done an amazing job with Remnant: From The Ashes.

Is it your Type of Game?

Remnant: From The Ashes is the literal gun-blazing version of Dark Souls type game.  The game is made on borrowed concepts but they have improved every concept to a great degree. The campaign is randomly generated so your experience will be different for each playthrough. Every time you will face different types of bosses in different environments. Dark Souls fans might like this game. If you want to try a new type of looter shooter then Remnant: From The Ashes is for you. It is game for players who play a game multiple times and want a different experience form each playthrough. If you don’t like Dark Souls type games then this game might not be for you. If you are more into shooting games then Rage 2 and Wolfenstein: Youngblood might be the games for you.
