A new first-party studio by PlayStation has been announced, which is called Dark Outlaw Games. The studio is being led by Jason Blundell, who is a veteran game designer in the industry.
During an interview, the studio head and director Jason Blundell stated that he has been working on an unknown project silently.
Jason Blundell stated, “It’s such a privilege to be able to do it with Sony as a new first-party studio,” and further clarified, “Sony doesn’t set up first-party studios all the time. To have that privilege is humbling; it’s really nice. I’m really excited.”
Blundell also said that the studio is hiring talent while keeping a low profile as the they work on the development of the game. The statement from Jason Blundell reads “We’re getting the team to jell, getting the ideas clicking – I’m a programmer at heart, so let’s test those assumptions: Is it working? You’re trying to escape velocity.”
Jason Blundell has been in the video games industry for almost 20 years. He was one of the heads of Treyarch and also worked as a lead developer on Call of Duty Zombies. He has been working for Activision for 13 years and later on left them in 2020 to form Deviation Games along with another industry veteran, Dave Anthony.
The rumors regarding the formation of Dark Outlaw originated in May 2024 when a former Deviation Games technical director Michael Anthony stated that a new IP is in the works from the studio.
PlayStation and Deviation Games signed a deal in 2021 to develop a new triple-A IP. The deal started to fall off once Blundell left Deviation Games back in 2022. Sometime later, the developer laid off 90 employees and a year after that the studio was closed down in March 2024.
