Is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Worth It? Multiplayer and Zombies Review

Call of Duty is back, it’s a new year so a new Call of Duty is a must just like Christmas, this time we have Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. It is the same game but with a different developer. The reboot of Modern Warfare has been pretty ambitious. However, this time around, it feels more like a Modern Warfare 2 with a new coating. There are new maps and one new mode but the rest of the game remains nearly the same.

The developers only got one year to create the multiplayer so it is surprising how it got to the point where it did. The fact that the multiplayer is functional after only a year of development is a feat in itself. There are some small changes here and there but these small changes can make a difference. Gameplay improvements lean on what always has been for the series. The developers have listened to the community and made changes which should be appreciated.

The game does feel more responsive and fun to play due to these changes. However, the good feeling that these changes bring only lasts for a couple of hours. Most of the time it feels more like an expansion of The Modern Warfare 2 reboot. The changes here are not as robust as they should have been since it is a new standalone game. All this makes you wonder Is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 worth it? Let’s find out.

Changes in the Gameplay

There are some changes here in there that make the game a little different than the previous one. Stuff like higher time to kill, and changes in movements such as slide canceling, and reload canceling make it more responsive. You can slide cancel by default and don’t have to change the button layout. Just tap jump and you will cancel the slide. People who are used to old controls will need time to adjust to this new layout.

Camping is still as effective though it is not as prevalent as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1. Since players are moving faster, it could be the reason that camping is not as effective. Tactical stance is a new thing in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. It lets you hold the gun at a craned angle to aim down sight quickly at the cost of accuracy. Sliding forces you into the tactical stance. So you won’t be landing perfect hits with high RPM weapons while sliding.

Maps

Nearly all maps are remakes of Modern Warfare 2. Maps feel weak and the promise of future maps has been made but better maps from the start could have been better. The first Modern Warfare was new in all aspects the second game was just the campaign and this new one is no different. Most of the maps from the second Modern Warfare are back but there are some changes.

The spawn locations on maps are terrible in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. There are a lot of spawn locations that can result in instant death or you will see an enemy spawn near you.

Weapons and The Field

It needs to balance things out for both the old and new guns. Overall balance is not that bad as you won’t see certain guns completely dominating others. You will see more ARs used than any other weapons but that has been the case with Call of Duty games for a long time. There are a lot of guns in the game to choose from.

Weapon tuning is out this year and it is a place to add aftermarket parts and attachments. Tuning weapons can change how some guns work. It is a good idea but it has a lot of changes that can make it feel gimmicky. Kill changes can be frustrating since enemies have more health. Each enemy takes at least one additional bullet to take them down compared to last year. Shotguns can take down enemies with one or two shots depending on where you shot them. Aim assist has been disabled for Marksman rifles.

Things that people wanted back such as Dead Silence are back. There are some new field upgrades. One such upgrade is the Breach Drone which travels in straight lines and damages anything that it hits. If you want to get certain weapons, field upgrades, or aftermarket parts, then you have to complete daily challenges on top of leveling up in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3.

There is a huge workout for getting these items. There are ways to get around that by getting tokens from zombie mode. It is still another step but it’s better than doing the other grind. Daily challenges are easy to finish but the game might give challenges related to weapons that you don’t have access to. Maybe the challenges are designed like that to stop hardcore players from unlocking everything in a day or two.

Game Modes

All the modes from the previous games are back and there is only one new mode. Team Death Match, Domination, Search and Destroy, Hard Point, Kill Confirmed, Ground War, and Invasion are some of the modes in the game. Ground Wars and Invasion are still perfect hunting zones for snipers, it has always been like this so it is not something new. Team Death Match is still the meat of the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3.

A new mode called War has also been introduced. It is a slaughter fest and has only one map more maps will be added later. The mode is all about completing objectives on a linear map. These objectives include capturing SAM sites, reprograming computers, and escorting a tank, you have to do all this before the time runs out. It is all that the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 offers as something new.

Zombies

Zombie mode is mostly the reskin of the DMZ mode and there is no PVP element involved. The zombie mode is just a DMZ with Zombies thrown in the mix. Zombie mode is set on a big map and multiple teams are present on the map. Instead of competing against them you just run around the map and they will just be there. There is no player-to-player interaction other than teaming up.

It is a map from Warzone 2.0 with zombies scattered around. There are no changes to the map and it looks exactly the same. The map feels empty and boring but things can get interesting once you get to the center. The closer you are to the center the tougher the zombies you will be facing. It becomes more crowded as you get to the center which is a drastic shift for the overall feel of the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3.

Verdict

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 makes small changes that make up for the tangible experience. The smart gameplay changes present the series in a new light even though that light is dim. The changes that it makes are not groundbreaking but it does make the experience slightly different. At its core, Modern Warfare 3 is a reskin version of the Modern Warfare 2. Most of the maps are just slightly different versions of the previous game.

Unlike MW 1, the changes here are not that much. MW2 saw fewer changes than MW1 which has made the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 worse than the first two. Part of the reason for such shallow changes is the fact that developers were not given enough time to deliver a good experience. It is a repackaged content for the people that have skipped the last one. The amount of stuff you get is not worth the price. They could have skipped this year to deliver a better experience next year but they knew people were going to buy it. In the end, it is just a new year so a new Call of Duty.
