Made on Unreal Engine 5 by Fntastic The Day Before was a game that was in development for many years. It reached the point when people started to question its legitimacy. Upon launch, it faced severe criticism to the point when many started calling it a scam.
Fntastic was facing legal issues along with multiple accusations of plagiarism, extensive mismanagement, and unpaid labor. The game was delisted from Steam and its multiplayer was shut down in the following months.
After the whole fiasco, Fntastic was closed for obvious reasons but now they are trying to come back. A new post on X shows that they have returned to their account called FntasticHQ and are saying. “Everyone deserves a second chance. We deeply apologize to everyone for The Day Before and take full responsibility for what happened.” Along with the apology they also posted a link to their website which has the title, The Fntastic Plan for Recovery.
There is a FAQ as well as a How You Can Help page on the website. They have also admitted that their team has dwindled with some of them working quote on quote “goodwill basis,” It ties into unpaid labor issues that we discussed earlier.
The New Game
The developer is now working on a new game which is called Escape Factory. A Kickstarter has been created to raise funds for the game. If Fntastic does not reach its funding goal then it won’t be returning. They also said that if this fundraising campaign does not reach the goal then they will refund all the money that they have raised.
Fntastic developed The Day Before and another game called Propnight. After the failed launch of The Day Before, they lost rights to both these games. The developer has admitted that their problem was that they got “overly ambitious goals on a low indie budget, a team without AAA experience, and embellished marketing.”
Even though people paid for the game, they were fully refunded for all their purchases for The Day Before. There could be truth to what they are doing but after what happened with The Day Before, most people are skeptical.
