Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a big flop and the new report sheds light on what went wrong with it. It was developed by Rocksteady Studios which is no stranger to superhero games. They are the developers of the single-player Batman Arkham series. This new report shed light on the things that made it a big flop and the impact it had on the publisher.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is set in the same universe as the Arkham series but it is the first time the studio made a live service game. It was one of the biggest video game flops in 2024 and has resulted in a $200 million loss for its publisher Warner Bros. Apparently, the live-action idea is not sitting well with superhero games.
Now, all of it begs a question, which is an obvious one, what went wrong?
As per the report from Bloomberg (publisher of the report) and the employees that they have talked to, multiple things went wrong which resulted in such a massive failure.
One of the major issues was the lack of direction because it kept changing, and stepping into the new genre that the developers had no experience with and were not ready for.
The publisher (Warner Bros) had massive success with Hogwarts Legacy, a game that was developed by Portkey Games. Portkey Games was the studio that was established from the ground up specifically for Hogwarts Legacy. With more than 24 million copies sold worldwide in a single year was a feat in itself for the newly established developer.
Days Are Numbered for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
What makes matters worse is the fact that its live service nature is going to canalize it, once developers pull the plug on it. It feels like Anthem all over again.
As per the recent update from Rocksteady Studios “Now that both Episodes for Season 1 are in your hands, our developer updates will change from being weekly to releasing them when we have big news to share about future content” It seems like doors are closing.
They further stated, “We hope this will make the release of each new update an exciting event while keeping you all up to date on all the happening with the game!” Based on all announcements it feels like the game is going toward a closing. Even though developers are thinking of pulling the plug on it, they haven’t given up on the genre.
The developer Rocksteady is going back to the single-player game and is working on releasing a Director Cut for Hogwarts Legacy.
