The Servers of Anthem Are Shutting Down

It’s done, EA Games (Electronic Arts) has announced that they are permanently shutting down the servers for Anthem in 2026. Developed by BioWare, Anthem is an online-only game and will become unplayable after January 12, 2026. There won’t be any offline mode, so if you have a copy of Anthem, it will become useless.

Released in 219, Anthem was supposed to be the next-gen looter shooter that would leave a mark and become a major game in the genre, at least on paper. I mean, its launch was rough, it lacked content, and it was buggy as hell; all of these problems plague it to this day. It was supposed to be the game that evolves and changes with time, but that idea never came to fruition. Anthem 2.0 was announced in February 2021, which was supposed to rejuvenate the game and bring a major overhaul, but that project was also scrapped.

In Anthem, players take control of freelancers who are the users of Exosuits known as Javelins in a shared open world environment.

EA is using the word “Sunsetting” for the shutdown, an act that will completely end the server support for the game. Like other games, there won’t be any offline mode, making the game completely inaccessible after the shutdown. Fans are not happy with the lack of offline mode.

The shutdown of Anthem from EA games is not a good trend because it makes the game completely unplayable, as the developers kill the support. Voices have been raised against such practices, which have even led to initiatives, “Stop Killing Games,” that are advocating for the prevention of digital game shutdowns.

When the developer pulls the plug on the servers, all customizations, purchases, and progress will be completely gone. The only way to preserve the experience will be through screenshots and recordings.
