The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a new Zelda game and the first Nintendo game with a $70 price tag. Despite being released on an old handheld console, surprisingly it is bigger and better than Breath of The Wild. After spending hours in the game it starts to show how much it has to offer. The game has 100 hours of content and that is just through the main content. With side content, there are hundreds of hours of content to be experienced. Breath of the Wild was already a big game and Tears of The Kingdom is even bigger. It has all that Breath of The Wild has along with extra stuff.
While the first game was about a personal journey, this one take you on a special adventure with Link. It is more like Breath of The Wild but has extra stuff. There is a lot of ambition and fun to be had, depending on your preference. The nostalgia and the vibe that it offers are similar to Breath of The Wild. Some things have been changed while others remain the same. There is a lot of new stuff that the game has which makes it a brand new experience.
The game does not vibe well in the beginning and needs some time to get used to. It has new abilities and things that require some time to get the hang of it. Once the exploration starts and you go beyond the starting region everything starts to shine. Playing the game with all that it has to offer makes up for an interesting experience. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom needs some time to get used to but once it does it is a fun experience.
Setting and Basics
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom takes place in Hyrule that has changed to a great degree. There are now islands floating in the sky. These islands are filled with ancient secrets. Debris and weather have changed the landscape of Hyrule. There is a lot of storytelling from the beginning of the game. Dialogues of different characters and cut scenes will have indirect storytelling. You will get to know the lore of the world through dialogues and environmental storytelling.
The game feels like it has more to say and more stories to tell. The tutorial area is new and fresh with a lot of things to teach. It teaches a lot of new mechanics and new abilities. The game can be challenging and it will take some time to get the hang of it. Things can feel fresh both story-wise and visually. After the training area, once you go back to Hyrule, things start to feel like Breath of The Wild. The region has transformed but, some things are the same. The music, and grassy fields are the same. Some of the early game is straightforward forward with shrines and all that.
General Gameplay
It takes some time to tune in to new abilities. Generally, it feels more Breath of The Wild. You have to play it for some time for the game to start feeling good. After playing it for some time you will feel how much the game has to offer. It gets better the more time you spend with the game. As you play more of it, more stuff will be revealed to you. It will start to feel better as you see more stuff such as new enemies, new areas, new biomes, music, weirdness, and the ability to use your abilities more creatively. The more you play the more you will realize how ambitious and different the game is.
There are three separate maps. One original Hyrule from Breath of The Wild, with a lot of locations destroyed or changed. Sky cities with big temples in the air with a lot of optional stuff in the sky that you can be explored. There are optional shrines, optional bosses, chests, and a lot of other things in the sky that you will get a chance to explore. The game wants you to explore and look for things everywhere.
The first couple of hours of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom might not be that good for some players. It did not go well with me in the beginning but once you get to dungeons and other stuff, it starts to feel good. You can even get lost in it because it throws a lot of stuff at you. Even if its building mechanics do not win you over in the beginning it will win you over once you spend some time with it.
Tune with Abilities
There are three new skills that Link can use. Ultra Hand is one of these skills. It is a skill used to glue different things together. You can take anything and stick together. It enables you to combine different things. You can cut a tree and then combine its logs to make a rift.
There are a lot of possibilities. Attach rockets to something and make it fly in the air. Make a boat by putting an engine on it. Put a hook on a cart, put an engine in it, and attach it to a zip line. You can put an engine on a boat and make a motorboat. You can customize different gliders. The possibilities are limitless.
Anything you see can be attached creatively. At times, you might go through a completely different path than the one game wants you to follow. The creativity of Ultra Hand unlocks possibilities that were not there before.
Ascend is another skill that lets you go straight up in the air. You can go through any roof by using Ascend. You can use it to check an area on the top side by going through the roof. Anything covering your head can be crossed over to the other side. Due to the use of Ascend, you will think about all the surroundings instead of what you are only seeing in front of you.
Recall is another ability. You can rewind anything with Recall. You can use it to climb different areas. If something is lying on the ground, you can jump on top of it and then rewind it to its original position. If someone throws a rock at you, rewind it to throw it back. There are a lot of possibilities with rewind ability as well.
More Creativity
Another major skill in the game is merger. You can combine different things and make something new from them. Combine spear with rock and make a rock spear. Combine fire with cannon and make a flame thrower. You can combine different materials with arrows to make different types of arrows. There are a lot of possibilities to make a lot of different weapons. If you have material, you can turn the tide of combat.
You can stick together a lot of different things with the skills. Create stuff, explode things, do all kinds of stuff and the game won’t crash. If something is doable then it is doable and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom won’t stop you from doing it. You will need to use the creativity of the game. The more creative you are the better it is. The game can be challenging and some enemies can even one-shot you if you are not careful. So you will need to use everything that the game has to offer.
You can use ascend and all other abilities anywhere in the game. Everything in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is designed to be messed with. You can be going in the air and then diving on the ground. All of it is seamless with no loading screens. There is a lot of trial and error in the game. The mechanics take some time to get used to. Creative people will have a blast with it. The amount of things you can make with all that it has to offer is insane.
Embrace The World
There is an underground world that spams throughout the map of Hyrule. It is everywhere underground and makes up for an interesting concept of the underworld. If you get hurt underground then you will stay hurt. You will only heal once you leave the depth. It also offers the best gear in the game. So it is a high-risk high-reward area.
Exploring the map is always fun. You can go up in the sky and see all the world to uncover the hidden area. After that just fall down and glide in the air. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has a sense of discovery that makes exploration a main part of the fun. There is even an option of slowing down and taking headshots. From an art standpoint, it embraces the colors. The colors are more vibrant that sit well with the general feel of the game. Sunsets are really interesting and overall The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom feels more artistic.
Go through the shrine to explore the game more in-depth. It is a massive open-world switch game. There are only a few areas where FPS drops and mostly it is all good. The drop in performance is in the realm of expectation. The overall performance is nice, unlike some other games.
Verdict
The deeper you go in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom the better it feels. It becomes more interesting as you play more of it. Since you will be discovering new things it makes the overall experience more interesting. The name of the game fits with the story and feels like a direct continuation of the Breath of The Wild. Side quests are also good and offer a lot of interesting side stories. It let you explore the game outside the main quest line.
This is a game that needs to be experienced through exploration and needs time to get to the interesting bits. It is a better Breath of The Wild. There are more secrets, treasures, stories, and a lot of other things. The more you explore the more you will experience. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has so many secrets and stories that make it an amazing experience. If you like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild, then you will have a blast with this one.
